How Long Should You Plan for a Family Photo Session?

Quick answer: Most of my family photo sessions in Orange County take about an hour, start to finish. Families with babies and toddlers often get their best photos in the first 30 to 45 minutes, and extended families with lots of groupings usually need 90 minutes. I plan every session around golden hour, so we confirm your exact timeline when you book.

I’m a family photographer here in Orange County and a toddler mom, so I promise I’m asking the same questions about my own calendar. Here’s the real answer.

When you book me as your photographer you don’t need to show up with backup outfits, 300 snacks, arrive super early and look like you are ready for Mount Everest. I have everything planned for you. I give you your outfits, hair and makeup, I come with the florals, and everything else that is needed. You simply arrive and we have the best time.

When parents of little ones ask me how long a session takes, they usually aren’t asking about my limits. They’re asking about their kids’. How long can my two-year-old hold it together? Is my baby going to need a feed in the middle? Maybe you’ve had a rushed, sweaty, everybody-cried session before, and you’re quietly nervous about round two. Don’t be. With me you are going to get the best.

How Long Does a Family Photo Session Usually Take?

My standard family photo session is about one hour of shooting time. That’s the sweet spot for most families. It is enough time for everyone to warm up and for us to capture the posed “frame it over the fireplace” images and the in-between moments, without anyone melting down.

What the hour includes: Every grouping you want, from the full family to the small groups and individuals. I plan it all.

When does the clock start? At your scheduled session time, not when you pull into the lot. So arriving 10 to 15 minutes early gives you breathing room to settle in without cutting into your photos.

The range I actually see: Most sessions land between 45 and 75 minutes. Families with a baby or toddler often wrap closer to 45 minutes, because we get what we need while everyone’s happy. Bigger families, lots of groupings, or a slow-to-warm-up kiddo push things toward the full hour or a little past it.

How many photos will you get? From a one-hour session, families can expect 60+ fully edited images. That’s plenty to fill a wall, an album, and your holiday cards. I also offer all inclusive heirloom items.

What Actually Happens During a Family Photo Session?

Here’s the timeline, so the hour feels accounted for instead of mysterious.

Minutes 0 to 10: Hello, hugs, and zero pressure. I don’t start with “okay everyone, look at me and smile!”

Minutes 10 to 25: The big family photos. While everyone’s fresh and outfits are still clean, we get the full-family portraits, the ones Grandma wants framed. I pose you gently. I’ll tell you where to put your hands and when to snuggle in, so you never have to wonder what to do.

Minutes 25 to 45: Play, movement, and the good stuff. This is where the heart of your gallery lives. Walking together, tickle attacks, swinging the kids between you, whispering secrets. I guide the prompts, you just react, and those in-between moments turn into the photos you’ll print biggest.

Minutes 45 to 60: Siblings, solos, and just the two of you. Sibling photos usually take 5 to 10 minutes (longer if someone is committed to not touching their brother). Individual portraits take a few minutes per child. Then I’ll steal mom and dad for a couple of romantic frames while the kids take a snack break.

Why Do Some Family Sessions Run Longer Than Others?

Every family is different, so the honest answer is “it depends.” Here’s what it depends on:

  • Group size. A family of four is a very different hour than a family of eleven.
  • Ages. Babies and toddlers set the pace (and the pace is often “fast, then done”).
  • Number of groupings. Every combination you add, like each grandparent with each grandchild, adds a few minutes. It adds up faster than people expect.
  • Locations. A second spot means walking or driving and then resettling.
  • Arrival energy. This is the big one nobody talks about.

How Long Should Families With Babies and Toddlers Plan For?

Here’s the truth from a photographer who is also raising a toddler: little ones give you about 20 to 30 minutes of their best selves. After that, we’re running on snacks, bubbles, and the kindness of strangers.

That’s why, for a family photo session with toddlers, a shorter session often gets better photos, not worse ones. We front-load the must-haves, like the full family shot and a couple of classic portraits, while everyone’s fresh. Then we let the rest of the session be play.

The Time Before Your Session Matters More Than the Session Itself

This is my best-kept secret: the hour before we meet shapes everything.

What I ask families to do in the hour before:

  • Feed everyone a real snack or a light meal. Hangry toddlers are not photogenic toddlers.
  • Time naps so little ones wake up at least an hour before the session, not five minutes before.
  • Get dressed at home, but save the shoes and anything white until you’re parked.
  • Leave a few extra minutes for traffic (hello, PCH on a Saturday).

Arrival timing. I ask families to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. [ERIN: confirm] That buffer is for bathroom trips, a quick outfit check, and a moment to shake off the drive, so when our session starts, you’re actually ready.

The logistics that save real minutes later: Do a bathroom stop before you walk to the location. Keep one small, mess-free snack in your pocket (no Cheetos, no blue candy, trust me). Bring the shoes everyone will actually wear.

What to leave in the car: the big diaper bag, the backup outfits, the stroller full of stuff, and your phone. I’ll hold anything you truly need, but the less you’re juggling, the more present you’ll be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to arrive early for our family photo session?

Yes. Please plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. That buffer covers parking, bathroom trips, and shaking off the drive, so we can start right on time. If you arrive right on the dot, we’ll still start, but your family will likely need a few minutes to settle in.

What happens if our family shows up late?

Life with kids happens, and I get it! Just text me if you’re running behind. Because outdoor sessions are timed to the light (and I may have another family after you), we’ll usually still end at the scheduled time.

How much time should an extended family session take?

Most extended family sessions take 75 to 90 minutes. The biggest factors are how many family units are coming and how many combinations you want. A shot list ahead of time keeps things moving so nobody’s standing around waiting. [ERIN: confirm]

How long after the session will we get our photos?

Galleries are typically delivered within 3 weeks. During that time I hand-select your best images and edit each one individually for true-to-life color and that soft, timeless look. You’ll get a sneak peek sooner.

Will bad weather make our session run longer?

No. If the weather turns, we reschedule rather than stretch the session. I watch the forecast (and our famous marine layer) closely and will reach out a day or two ahead if we need to move. Rescheduling for weather is always free.
