Christmas Family Photo Outfits: What to Wear

Holiday outfit detail huntington beach christmas session

I’m Erin, an Orange County motherhood and family photographer, and holiday mini sessions are coming to my Huntington Beach studio this season. If you’re already stressing about Christmas family photo outfits, take a breath. This guide shows you exactly what to wear so your family looks timeless, cozy, and pulled together, with zero meltdowns.

Why Classic and Neutral Always Wins

Trends change fast. Your holiday cards stay on Grandma’s fridge forever. When you choose neutral family Christmas photo outfits, your images feel like heirloom portraits instead of “oh, that was the year we all wore buffalo plaid.” Neutrals also look great in studio Christmas photos. They sit softly against the backdrop, keep skin tones warm and glowing, and makes sure that your family stays the stars of the session.

Holiday Styles for the Whole Family:

Step One: Start With a Neutral Base

Build most of the family’s look from these shades:

  • Cream and ivory: soft, bright, and very magical for the holidays
  • Oatmeal and camel: warm and cozy, like a latte in sweater form
  • Soft gray and heather: easygoing and flattering on everyone
  • Chocolate brown: rich and grounding, especially for dads and older kids
  • Winter white: perfect for babies and little ones

Step Two: Add a Pop of Red or Green

Here’s where the Christmas magic comes in. My rule is that one or two people wear the color and everyone else stays neutral. It keeps the photo polished instead of looking like a costume party.

Reds to try: cranberry, deep cherry, burgundy, wine
Greens to try: emerald, forest, hunter, deep olive

Easy ways to add the pop:

  • Mom in a deep red velvet dress while everyone else wears cream
  • Little girl in an emerald velvet dress with a big bow
  • Little boy in a forest green sweater vest over a white collared shirt
  • Red satin hair bows, Mary Janes, or tights on a neutral outfit
  • Dad in a burgundy quarter-zip or tie with a camel blazer

Christmas Photo Outfit Ideas: 4 Ready-to-Copy Looks

If you want someone to just tell you what to do, here are my favorite Christmas photo outfit ideas:

1. The Cozy Classic
Everyone in cream, oatmeal, and camel knits. Add one red bow on the littlest one. Simple, soft, and swoon-worthy.

2. The Velvet Moment
Mom in wine or cranberry velvet. Dad in a cream sweater and brown trousers. Kids in ivory with little burgundy accents.

3. The Evergreen
Mom in a flowy cream dress, daughter in emerald velvet, son in a forest green cable knit, and Dad in soft gray. It feels like Christmas morning in a Nancy Meyers movie.

4. The Little Holiday Stars
Parents in all neutrals so the kids steal the show: a red tulle dress, a green bowtie, or a tiny tweed suit.

What to Skip When Choosing a Wardrobe

  • Logos, graphics, and characters
  • Neon or super bright colors
  • Everyone in the exact same outfit (coordinate, don’t match)
  • Light-up ugly sweaters (I love the spirit, but save them for the office party)
  • Busy small patterns that compete with faces
  • Matching Christmas jammies, unless that’s the whole vibe. Then own it, baby.

Holiday Mini Sessions in Orange County: Your Wardrobe Game Plan

  1. Pick one person’s outfit first, usually Mom’s, and build everyone else around it.
  2. Choose your pop color: red or green, not both on everyone.
  3. Lay it all out on the bed together and snap a phone pic. If one piece jumps out, swap it.
  4. Bring backups for the kids. Spilled snacks are a spiritual law.
  5. Send me your photo! You’re never guessing alone. I’ll happily look over your holiday photo outfit ideas before your session.

MOTHERHOOD CHANGED ME IN WATS THAT I HAD NEVER EXPECTED. AFTER WALKING THROUGH PPD, I LEARNED HOW TO TENDER AND UNSEEN A MOTHER'S HEART CAN FEEL. I UNDERSTAND HOW MEANINGFUL IT IS TO BE MET WITH LOVE AND CARE,
AS A MOTHER, I LEAD WITH GENTLENESS. AS AN ARTIST, I CREATE THE SAME WAY; SOFTLY, THOUGHTFULLY, AND WITH INTENTION. EACH SESSION THAT I CURATE FOR A FAMILY IS DONE WITH CARE. I PHOTOGRAPH MOTHER'S THE WAY THAT I ONCE NEEDED TO BE SEEN. I ENSURE THAT MOTHER'S AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE GUIDED AND HONORED WHEN THEY ARE IN FRONT OF ME.

EACH TIME A MOTHER SELECTS ME TO CREATE A STORY WITH THEIR IMAGES I AM HONORED. IT BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY TO HELP OTHERS CREATE MOMENTS THAT ARE TIMELESS.
