What to wear summer maternity session southern california

What to Wear for Summer Maternity Photos

For summer maternity photos, choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like chiffon, linen, or jersey in soft neutrals and muted tones. Flowing, loose silhouettes keep you comfortable while photographing beautifully. Schedule your session during golden hour for cooler temps, bring water, and consider an indoor studio as a heat-free alternative.

If you are pregnant in the summer, you already know that everything is warmer than it should be. Add a photo session to the mix and suddenly ‘what to wear’ becomes a question. This post breaks down exactly what fabrics, silhouettes, and outfit choices keep summer mamas cool and camera-ready. Plus, the practical tips I share with every client who books a summer session with me.

Why Does Summer Change Everything About Maternity Session Style?

When you’re pregnant, your body is already running hotter than it normally would. Add a Southern California summer afternoon to that equation and you’re not just dealing with the outdoor heat. You are also trying to cool your body.

This is why the outfit conversation in a summer consultation sounds completely different from any other time of year. We’re not just asking “what looks good?” We’re asking “what lets you stay present, relaxed, and actually enjoy this experience in the heat?”

Comfort shows up on camera. A mom who is overheated or counting down the minutes until she can sit in air conditioning will look that way in her images. A mom who feels good, who’s cool enough to laugh and breathe and actually be in the moment? She looks incredible. Every single time.

This is part of the reason I offer a client closet. I know that what I have is going to make you look beautiful and not overheat. The dresses that I offer are ones that helps moms feel cool and confident on session day. This takes one thing off your plate making your photos with me even more relaxed.

What Fabrics Keep You Cool and Look Beautiful in Photos?

Here’s what actually works:

Chiffon is probably my favorite for summer sessions. It’s lightweight, it moves beautifully in a breeze, and it photographs with this dreamy, soft quality that heavier fabrics just can’t replicate.

Linen can be wonderful…with one caveat. Lightweight linen, loosely woven, is a great breathable option. Stiff, structured linen blends are not. Know the difference before you buy.

Lightweight jersey and modal knits are great for fitted styles. These breathe, they have just enough stretch to move with your bump comfortably, and they photograph with a clean, polished look.

What to avoid: thick cotton, velvet, structured denim, anything with boning or built-in padding, and anything that describes itself as “sculpting.” These fabrics trap heat like it’s their job.

One more thing — and this one surprises almost every client I bring it up with: cooling shorts or moisture-wicking undergarments. A breathable base layer underneath your session outfit is a game-changer. It extends how comfortable you feel and it prevents chafing in the hear. Almost every mom I’ve mentioned this to has texted me after to say thank you. It’s a tiny detail that makes a real difference.

What Should Mom Wear for an Outdoor Summer Session?

For outdoor summer sessions, the goal is simple: flowing, loose silhouettes that move with the breeze. Which is what I have. Each mom has my client closet available to her when she books with me. In the event that you have an outfit in mind I would love for you to wear it! We always have a call to go over outfits and pick what is best.

Color palette for summer: I’m always drawn toward soft neutrals and pastels. That is what will get you the gorgeous light and airy photos.

Necklines and sleeves: Off-shoulder and wide-neck styles are a natural fit for summer. They’re cooler, they’re flattering, and they photograph gorgeously.

Footwear: Bare feet, simple sandals, and low wedges are all beautiful for outdoor sessions.

Hair and makeup: I always love when mom spoils herself and gets hair and makeup done. Makeup artists know exactly what to use and how much makeup to apply for the warmer weather.

Can an Indoor Session Help You Beat the Summer Heat?

I want to say something here that I mean completely sincerely: an indoor session is not a backup plan. For summer, it’s often the right plan.

Studio sessions have everything going for them in July and August: air conditioning, no golden hour time pressure, no parking lot hike in the heat, no walking across a field, and a bathroom that’s always about 30 seconds away. For a mom who’s further along, running warm, or just done with the idea of being outside in Southern California summer heat, that list of things not to deal with is genuinely appealing.

What a studio session actually looks like is something I love to walk clients through, because so many people come in thinking “indoor” means “less beautiful” and it’s just not true. Studio sessions have a softness and intimacy that’s actually a stunning contrast to the golden outdoor aesthetic. I have mentioned before that Spark Studios in Huntington Beach is my go to location for gorgeous maternity photos.

Studio sessions offer something different: consistent, controlled light that works beautifully in any season, total privacy, and none of the weather variables that come with outdoor shoots. If you love a clean, timeless look, a studio session in summer might be exactly what you’re looking for.

How to Stay Cool During a Summer Maternity Session

Let’s talk logistics, because the best outfit in the world won’t save a session that’s scheduled at noon in July. (Which I would 100% NEVER offer!)

Timing is everything. Early morning and golden hour are the two windows I recommend for summer sessions, full stop. The light is better and the temperature is manageable.

Hydration and fuel. I keep cold water on hand at every session, but for summer sessions I’m extra intentional about it. I encourage clients to bring an electrolyte drink, especially if they’re further along. A light snack nearby is also worth planning for.

Shade and cooling tools. I plan sessions with shade in mind. Having a shaded spot to return to between setups isn’t a convenience. A cooling towel or a small handheld fan can completely reset the session when the heat is creeping in.

Realistic timelines. Summer sessions have more built-in breathing room than sessions in cooler months. We move a little slower, we pause when we need to, and we’re not rushing through setups.

The heat exit plan. I talk about this with every summer client before session day: it is always okay to slow down, take a longer break, or call it early. The images from a relaxed, shorter session are better than the ones from a mom who pushed through when she should have stopped. Your comfort is not negotiable. We can always make beautiful images in less time when you feel good.

What Should Partners and Kids Wear for Summer Photos?

Everything I just said about mom applies to everyone else in the frame too. A partner who is overheating looks stiff and uncomfortable on camera, and a toddler who is melting down because they’re too warm is nobody’s idea of a good time. (I say this as a fellow toddler mom who has been there.)

Partners: Lightweight linen button-downs, soft cotton shirts in neutral tones, or simple breathable dresses all coordinate beautifully with mom without competing for attention. The goal is complementary, not matching.

Color coordination for the whole family: Stick to the same soft, muted palette you’re building around mom. Coordinated doesn’t mean identical, it means everyone’s wearing tones that feel like they belong in the same frame.

Siblings: Fewer layers, nothing stiff, shoes they can actually move in, and outfits they genuinely feel comfortable in rather than dressed up in.

Timing kids in summer: I plan to work with little ones early in the session, before the heat (and their patience) has a chance to wear down. Cold water, a snack they love, and a plan for lots of fun is how I get those gorgeous photos.

What Does Booking a Summer Session with Me Actually Look Like?

I want to walk you through this because I think knowing the process makes the whole thing feel a lot less overwhelming and a lot more exciting.

When you reach out to me, the summer outfit and comfort conversation starts early. As soon as you book I email you a style guide so you can start planning right way. We text and chat often about what your style is going to be.

For timing, I’m very intentional about summer scheduling. Early morning and golden hour are my strong recommendations, and I’ll talk through which window makes the most sense based on your due date, your location preferences, and how you’re feeling in your third trimester. My summer calendar fills faster than any other season because those comfortable windows are limited which is why I always encourage summer mamas to reach out earlier than they think they need to.

Once you’re booked, you’ll get detailed prep materials that include seasonal outfit guidance, fabric suggestions, color palette ideas, and everything you need to feel ready. I’m not going to send you a generic style guide and call it done — you’ll get real, specific direction that makes sense for your session.

After your session, your gallery is delivered in 2 weeks, and I’ll walk you through everything at your reveal appointment.

Summer sessions are booking now — and the early morning and golden hour windows fill first. If you have a late summer due date, this is your sign to reach out sooner rather than later.

Your Summer Maternity Photos Should Feel as Good as They Look

Here’s what I want you to take away from everything above: dressing for a summer maternity session is not about choosing between beautiful and comfortable. The right fabric, the right timing, and a few simple prep conversations make it completely possible to have both.

I’ve learned after years of summer sessions that what makes the difference between a session that feels hard and one that feels effortless is almost never the outfit itself. It’s showing up knowing what to expect and trusting that I have a plan for all of it.

If you’re nervous about doing a summer session I want to hear that. Tell me what’s worrying you, and let’s actually talk through it. Because there is an honest version of this conversation that isn’t a sales pitch, and I’m always happy to have it.

You deserve beautiful images from this season of your life. And I’m here to make sure getting them feels as good as looking at them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Maternity Photos

When is the best time of day for a summer maternity session?

Early morning (within the first hour after sunrise) and golden hour in the evening are the two best windows for summer sessions. Both offer softer, more flattering light and significantly cooler temperatures than midday.

What should I do if it is extremely hot on session day?

We have a plan for that. Depending on conditions, we can adjust timing, spend more time in shaded areas, build in extra breaks, or shift to an indoor or studio location if needed. I talk through the heat contingency with every summer client before session day so nothing is a surprise.

How far in advance should I book a summer maternity session?

I recommend reaching out 8–10 weeks before your due date for summer sessions and sooner if possible. Summer sessions fill faster than other seasons because the comfortable early morning and golden hour windows are limited. Early inquiries get first pick of preferred dates and time slots.

How long does a summer maternity session usually take?

My standard sessions run for an hour. Summer sessions are paced with a little more breathing room built in…more breaks, more shade stops, and a timeline that lets you stay comfortable rather than racing through setups. Comfort produces better images.

MOTHERHOOD CHANGED ME IN WATS THAT I HAD NEVER EXPECTED. AFTER WALKING THROUGH PPD, I LEARNED HOW TO TENDER AND UNSEEN A MOTHER'S HEART CAN FEEL. I UNDERSTAND HOW MEANINGFUL IT IS TO BE MET WITH LOVE AND CARE,
AS A MOTHER, I LEAD WITH GENTLENESS. AS AN ARTIST, I CREATE THE SAME WAY; SOFTLY, THOUGHTFULLY, AND WITH INTENTION. EACH SESSION THAT I CURATE FOR A FAMILY IS DONE WITH CARE. I PHOTOGRAPH MOTHER'S THE WAY THAT I ONCE NEEDED TO BE SEEN. I ENSURE THAT MOTHER'S AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE GUIDED AND HONORED WHEN THEY ARE IN FRONT OF ME.

EACH TIME A MOTHER SELECTS ME TO CREATE A STORY WITH THEIR IMAGES I AM HONORED. IT BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY TO HELP OTHERS CREATE MOMENTS THAT ARE TIMELESS.
