Are you looking for an Orange County newborn photographer? I bet that right now you might be focused on nursery décor, baby registries, and figuring out which car seat actually fits in your backseat. Booking a newborn photographer? That feels like something future-you can handle after the baby arrives. But here’s the thing—future-you is going to be sleep-deprived and trying to remember which day of the week it is. Present-you has the time and mental bandwidth to secure those dreamy newborn photos and find your perfect newborn photographer without the stress.

If you have been around for a little bit you know that I didn’t book newborn photos with my daughter. I thought that I could do them myself and that it would be fine. Guess what? It was not fine…and I never did them. Sure I have 780 photos on my phone but those aren’t the ones that I wanted to hang on my walls.
Hi, I’m Erin. A uxury newborn and family photographer based in Orange County, CA, and absolute lover of all things motherhood. I also happen to be a mom myself, so I’m going to give it to you straight: newborn sessions have a very specific timing window, and knowing about it early is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your brand new baby.
Pull up a chair (or a pregnancy pillow), and let’s talk timing.

Here’s the deal, and this is the part that surprises most first-time moms. The ideal time for a newborn photography session is within the first 5 to 14 days. That time is going to FLY by which is why you should book now.
Why so early? A few magical reasons:
Babies sleep. A LOT. In those first two weeks, newborns spend most of their time in a deep, curled-up, milk-drunk slumber. That’s what gives us those breathtaking sleepy poses. You get the little bum-up tuck and the tiny fist under the chin. We see the curl that makes you want to ugly cry because they’re so impossibly small.
Their bodies are still “curly.” In the first week and a half, babies still naturally fold into those adorable womb-like positions. Their muscles haven’t fully stretched out yet, which means posing them is gentle, natural, and safe. After about two weeks, they start to straighten out. While they’re still gorgeous, those iconic curled poses become much harder to achieve.
Their skin is at peak perfection. That brand-new, soft, perfectly-lit baby skin is absolutely stunning in week one. The peeling, the milia, the little birth marks — all of that starts to fade and change quickly. We capture them at their most delicate.

Here’s where so many mamas get caught off guard: you need to book your newborn session while you’re still pregnant. I recommend reaching out somewhere between 28 and 35 weeks along.
I know you’re exhausted and “booking a photographer” feels like something you’ll do “after.” But here’s the truth: newborn photographers (especially luxury photographers in Orange County) book up fast. We can only take a limited number of sessions each month, because your baby deserves our full attention, not a rushed slot squeezed between two other families. I only take on 3 newborns a month due to timing so it’s important to get yourself scheduled!
When you reach out during your pregnancy, here’s what we do: we tentatively reserve a spot around your due date. Once your little one makes their grand entrance, you text me, not some automated system and we lock in your exact session date based on when baby arrives. Easy, stress-free, handled.
You’ve got enough on your plate, mama. Let me take this one off of it.

Okay, real talk — babies did not get the memo about your due date. They show up whenever they feel like it, and honestly? That’s kind of their whole personality from day one. So let’s talk about what happens when your little one decides to make their debut ahead of schedule. Or what about keeps you waiting an extra week while you eat pineapple and bounce on a yoga ball at midnight.
If Baby Arrives Early
First of all — take a breath. I’ve got you. When your baby surprises everyone with an early arrival, the very last thing you need to be stressing about is your photography session. Once you’re settled and have the all-clear from your care team, you shoot me a text and we figure it out together. My calendar is intentionally built with flexibility so that I can shift things around for my mamas. You are not going to lose your spot, and you are not going to be left scrambling. I stay in close communication with every single client as their due date approaches, so you’ll always know exactly where things stand and that I’m just a text away.
If Baby Is Taking Their Sweet Time
Some babies are just dramatic (and I say that with so much love). If your due date comes and goes and you’re still waiting — first of all, I am rooting for you so hard — second of all, we simply adjust. I’ll keep your spot held and we’ll reschedule once baby makes their grand entrance. The golden window of 5–14 days is still absolutely achievable even if baby arrives a week or two after your due date. The plan doesn’t fall apart just because the timeline shifted.
The “What If” Anxiety Is Real — And I Take It Seriously
I know that for so many mamas, especially first-time moms, the uncertainty of those final weeks can feel overwhelming. What happens if I go into labor the night before? What if baby needs extra care after delivery? I may not feel like myself, then what? I hear you, and I want you to know that I have walked through unexpected scenarios with families before, and every single time, we figured it out with zero added stress on their end. Newborn sessions are my top calendar priority — I protect that flexibility on purpose, because I know that babies write their own stories.
When you book with me, you’re not just booking a session. You’re getting a photographer who genuinely cares about your experience and your peace of mind — not just the photos. We will make it work, whatever “it” looks like when your baby arrives.

First of all — no guilt here. You just had a baby. You were a little busy.
If your newborn is older than two weeks, we can absolutely still work together! At Erin Custer Photo, we offer lifestyle newborn sessions that lean into the awake, alert, brand-new-to-the-world personality your baby is starting to show. We capture snuggles, yawns, nursing moments, and those big eyes that are just starting to take in the world. These sessions are gorgeous in their own right and feel incredibly real and emotional.
The photos look different — but they are no less stunning or meaningful.

One of the things my clients love most about working with Erin Custer Photo is that we offer both studio and in-home newborn sessions in Orange County — because no two families are the same, and your experience should feel like yours.
In-Home Sessions are perfect for mamas who want to capture the real, raw, beautiful intimacy of those first days at home. Your bed, your light, your people. There is something so cinematic about a baby curled up in the sheets where they were brought home to.
Studio Sessions are perfect for those who want a clean, luxurious, timeless look with beautiful wraps, baskets, and props that I’ve curated with so much love. Think cream tones, soft textures, and a setting that feels like a dream. I hold my sessions at Spark Studios in Huntington Beach, CA. This is a perfect studio here in Orange County.
Not sure which is right for you? That’s literally what our consultation call is for — and I will happily talk your ear off (lovingly) until we figure it out together.

I want you to feel like you already have a best friend in your corner from the second you reach out. Here’s how it works:
That’s it. No stress. No confusion. Just you, your baby, and some of the most beautiful photos you will ever own.
Whether you’re 12 weeks along and extremely Type A, or you’re 36 weeks and just realized you haven’t booked anyone yet (this is me) there is no wrong time to reach out. The best time is right now. If you are in Orange County looking for a newborn photographer, I’m your girl.

MOTHERHOOD CHANGED ME IN WATS THAT I HAD NEVER EXPECTED. AFTER WALKING THROUGH PPD, I LEARNED HOW TO TENDER AND UNSEEN A MOTHER'S HEART CAN FEEL. I UNDERSTAND HOW MEANINGFUL IT IS TO BE MET WITH LOVE AND CARE,
AS A MOTHER, I LEAD WITH GENTLENESS. AS AN ARTIST, I CREATE THE SAME WAY; SOFTLY, THOUGHTFULLY, AND WITH INTENTION. EACH SESSION THAT I CURATE FOR A FAMILY IS DONE WITH CARE. I PHOTOGRAPH MOTHER'S THE WAY THAT I ONCE NEEDED TO BE SEEN. I ENSURE THAT MOTHER'S AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE GUIDED AND HONORED WHEN THEY ARE IN FRONT OF ME.
EACH TIME A MOTHER SELECTS ME TO CREATE A STORY WITH THEIR IMAGES I AM HONORED. IT BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY TO HELP OTHERS CREATE MOMENTS THAT ARE TIMELESS.
